The five-step lubricant decision framework

To reduce the risk of misapplication, plant leaders can follow a structured lubricant evaluation process. A practical lubricant review framework includes five important steps:

  1. Confirm original equipment manufacturer (OEM) requirements: Verify the lubricant specifications listed in the equipment manual.
  2. Verify viscosity grade: Ensure the lubricant matches the required viscosity classification.
  3. Confirm industry/OEM specifications: Check for formal approvals or compliance with required standards.
  4. Review technical data sheet (TDS) performance properties: Evaluate critical characteristics such as oxidation stability, viscosity index, demulsibility and foam control.
  5. Check safety data sheet considerations: Confirm appropriate handling procedures, personal protective equipment requirements and storage conditions.

Following this structured process reduces the likelihood of costly lubrication errors.
