Arc Flash University offers online curriculum to prevent accidents

-- Plant Engineering, 2/15/2008

Arc Flash University won’t have a basketball team or dorm rooms or ivy covered walls. It will, however, have a library and a commons area. It will even have a fraternity of sorts – one dedicated to those who care about keeping employees safe.

Sponsored by GE and Hawk IR, Arc Flash University is a series of monthly Webcasts on the topic of arc flash. Each month a different aspect of arc flash will be examined, with industry experts making presentations and answering questions from attendees on the topic.

“Every time we do a Webcast on arc flash, our viewers tell us they want more information,” said Plant Engineering editor Bob Vavra. “Because this is a critical topic to our readers, and to the industry, we wanted to bring together the leading experts on the topic for an in-depth look at the root causes of arc flash and how to prevent an incident.”

It is estimated that as many as 10 arc flash accidents occur each day in the U.S. The loss of life and the severe injuries that can occur as the result of an arc flash incident are well-documented, yet there is still a need for additional training and knowledge on the topic.

Eight areas will be covered in the Arc Flash University curriculum:

March 6 Arc Flash Analysis

April 3 Arc Flash Training

May 8 Arc Flash Prevention

June 5 Selective Coordination

July 10 PPE and Arc Flash

September 4 Liability & Insurance

October 2 Arc Flash R&D

November 6 The “CSI” of Arc Flash

Those interested in attending will be able to register for each session individually at www.PlantEngineering.com. The registration page will remember returning attendees. That’s important, because those who attend six of the eight sessions will be eligible to win Arc Flash University shirts and baseball caps. Attendees will also receive continuing education credits for attending.

Classes begin February 28, so go online at www.PlantEngineering.com and sign up today.
