Radio Frequency Company of Millis, Mass., has introduced a radio frequency drying system for industrial materials. In the RF dryer, product moves between two high-frequency electrodes that change polarity 40 million times per second. The process causes water molecules to reorient and generate heat throughout the thickness of the material, including continuous nonwoven webs, battings and foams.
This form of volumetric heating causes water to evaporate within the material and exit through the surface as a gas, rather than moving to the surface by capillary action as in conventional drying methods. The process is designed to limit migration of coating solids to the outer surfaces and support coating uniformity and material consistency.
Because water molecules respond to RF heating, the system is designed to apply more heat to wetter sections of the product, helping produce more uniform moisture content across the material.
RF energy provides volumetric heating that reduces the dwell time associated with conventional dryers and can reduce factory floor space requirements. These dryers are typically shorter than conventional dryers.
The systems also operate without warm-up time, allow immediate start and stop, and do not produce greenhouse gas emissions at the point of use.
