Spirax Sarco employees celebrate Top Plant award, anniversary
So far, 2008 has been a big year for Spriax Sarco’s plant in Blythewood, SC. The company is marking its 100th anniversary, and the Blythewood facility is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Add in the 2007 Top Plant designation from Plant Engineering, and it seemed like a party was in order.
That’s just what employees and dignitaries enjoyed in Blythewood on May 16. Under a bright South Carolina sun and a comfortable tent in the parking lot, Spirax Sarco marked the anniversaries and awards with a day of plant tours and speeches. Regional, state and federal officials came to celebrate Spirax Sarco’s success in Blythewood and to formally recognize the Top Plant award.
Plant Engineering editor Bob Vavra presented the Top Plant trophy to Spirax Sarco divisional director Tony Scrivin. “There are a lot of great examples of manufacturing excellence in America today. We’re honored to have the chance to come here and recognize your excellence,” Vavra told the more than 300 employees and dignitaries.
“I know, more than most, just how much you deserve this,” Scrivin said.
The recognition of the Top Plant award extended to the halls of Congress and to the South Carolina legislature. “I commend you on receiving the Top Plant award,” said U.S. Rep Joe Wilson (R-2nd). “It’s a confirmation of your professionalism and your ability to compete in the world economy.”
State senator Kay Patterson and state representative John L. Scott Jr. presented Spirax Sarco officials with a joint resolution passed in the South Carolina legislature recognizing the Top Plant award. “I’m glad to know that Spirax Sarco has decided to aspire to excellence,” Patterson told the employees.
David Logsdon, COO of the South Carolina Department of Commerce, represented South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford at the event. “I probably know more about the steam trap than anyone in state government,” Logsdon joked. “We at the Department of Commerce are honored that a South Carolina company was honored by Plant Engineering. The state has benefited greatly from the investment you’ve made here.”
The day concluded with employee and service awards presented to Spirax Sarco employees in recognition of the 10 years of service in Blythewood, as well as longtime service with the company.
