Gonzalo Conesa-Zamora, 38
Senior Controls Systems Engineer, ANSTO, Clayton, Victoria, Australia
MS Automation, Polytechnic University of Valencia
Gonzalo chose to pursue engineering because he loves to solve problems and to make the world a better place. It is for this last reason that he decided to work with ANSTO at their Australian Synchrotron (AS) site, where light is harnessed to achieve breakthroughs in areas as diverse as biotech/health, manufacturing, and material science. Within months of starting at AS, Gonzalo was running workshops and mentoring coworkers. He has been heavily involved in sharing his skill set with other professionals and leading gender-equity initiatives. As Chair of the Equity & Diversity Committee, he has spearheaded an internship program for female engineers and is heavily involved in the organization’s Women’s network. Currently, he is volunteering to establish a mentorship program for female engineering students at one of Australia’s major universities. He also mentors through AMES Australia to help relocated migrants succeed in their field. Outside of work and volunteering, Gonzalo loves to hike. Despite living in half a dozen cities spanning three continents, he has never lived more than 15 km from the ocean.
