National Safety Council makes BAPCO 2007 Robert W. Campbell Award recipient

The first non-North American company to receive the award, Bahrain Petroleum dedicates a number of resources to safety, health and environmental efforts, including a full-time staff, regular assessments and audits of performance and a budget of $20 million.

The National Safety Council announced this week that Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) is the 2007 recipient of the Robert W. Campbell Award. BAPCO is the first company outside of North America to receive the award for business excellence through safety, health and environment management. BAPCO officials will accept the award Monday, Oct. 15, during the National Safety Council’s 95th Annual Congress & Expo in Chicago.

BAPCO impressed the Campbell Award’s international review panel with a range of stringent audits and assessments the company regularly undertakes to maintain and exceed international standards. The panel also noted BAPCO’s corporate investment in SH&E management and the significant and positive impact these initiatives have had on the company’s overall business performance.
“BAPCO’s support of SH&E values extends across and beyond the company with a seamlessly integrated operation system oriented toward eliminating injuries, ill-health and environmental impact,” said Mei-Li Lin, Ph.D., executive director of research and statistical services and director of the Campbell Award. “BAPCO’s integration of SH&E into their strategic planning, design, and daily operations has achieved remarkable results in the company’s financial outcomes and improved employee, community and environmental safety and health.”
BAPCO devotes considerable resources to SH&E, with an annual budget of $20 million and a staff of 50 people working full-time on safety, health and environment activities. More than 60% of BAPCO employees are engaged in some form of corporate SH&E activity.
“Safety, health & environment are managed processes at BAPCO involving all employees at all levels of the organization,” said BAPCO Chief Executive Dr. Mustafa Al-Sayed. “We are extremely proud to be recognized yet again in the areas of SH&E with this very prestigious award.”
