Why JR is an Engineering Leader
After only 3 years at Syscon Automation, JR Landeen has discovered and implemented new technology for the company and its clients. JR managed many large-scale materials handling systems, including playing a substantial role in the largest project in Syscon’s history. JR helped create reusable code for many systems and developed new standards for electrical panel designs. He continues to grow and develop new skills that facilitate Syscon’s growth as a company.
Achievements, Advancement & Career-related Industry Contributions
JR recently received his Gold Certification in Ignition from Inductive Automation and finished the Fanuc Handling Tool Operation and Programming training. He uses his skills and certifications to build a strong clientele for Syscon. JR has implemented many material handling systems. Among them was the largest material handling project in Syscon’s history: a conveyor used to transport and track biomedical material. JR lent his skills to a team of engineers in the design and startup of over 1.4 miles of conveyor. JR handles many of Syscon’s service calls, requiring him to quickly learn and troubleshoot complex equipment he may have never seen before. He has helped many customers save hundreds of thousands of dollars by quickly diagnosing and fixing issues with their equipment.
Non-work-related Activities & Hobbies
JR spends most evenings in his garage gym, that he built, where he trains for physical charity events. One of JR’s favorite physical fundraisers is known as the Murph. This event raises scholarship money for aspiring students. The challenge consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and another mile run, all while wearing a 20lb weight vest. JR is supported in his endeavors by his wife and 2-year-old son. The family enjoys spending time together outdoors and will often go camping in the mountains or rock climbing in the nearby canyons.

Why JR chose this career
JR looks forward to working every day with so many awesome people and seeing so many remarkable processes. Working at a system integrator means that JR rarely performs the same type of project twice. Controls engineering covers such a wide range of challenges; there is never a boring day. This career path means JR is always learning different systems and developing new skills to help solve problems for others. Many times, JR must figure out new methods that no one has ever tried before. It’s awe-inspiring to see integrated systems that JR has helped create being used daily.
