Why Josh is an Engineering Leader

Josh started with JTI as a Controls Engineer in 2018 and is now the Controls Engineering Lead for central California. Josh currently manages 13 Controls Engineers, 8 Instrumentation Technicians and typically mentors 2-3 interns per year from area colleges. Josh is key to JTI’s growth in the nut industry, making JTI a leading industry expert, contributing to JTI’s ability to do full turn-key projects. Josh is JTI’s expert on wired and wireless industrial networks. His expertise has made JTI’s recent move to new headquarters successful.

Achievements, Advancement & Career-related Industry Contributions

  • ISA member
  • Instrumental in training not just control engineers/technicians but panel fabricators, mechanical and electrical engineers on both the fundamentals and complexity of automation and control systems.
  • JTI recruiter at Bakersfield area college job fairs
  • Served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Non-work-related Activities & Hobbies

Josh is an assistant coach for the Arvin High School baseball team, alongside his best friend, Eddie. Josh’s favorite pastime is baseball and he is an avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan. He enjoys going back to his alma mater to coach and develops good relationships with the teens of the Arvin community. Arvin is a small community (approximately 20,000 people), and although Josh no longer lives in Arvin, his parents and siblings do. He has a strong small-town pride and enjoys giving back to the community.

Interesting Details

Josh was formerly enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps as a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) specialist. CBRN Marines are trained to react and defend against different airborne, injection and absorbent hazardous attacks. Joshua led trainings for thousands of Marines. He was awarded multiple meritorious masts and won multiple promotional boards. Josh was a Sergeant at the time he was honorably discharged after almost 5 years of service. Josh can also play the trumpet and has played for church events many times.

Why Josh chose this career

Josh has a wonderful sense of humor, and when asked, would probably make a joke about it paying well. But he enjoys that each day is different from the last. There are new problems to solve and programs to create each day so that the job is never boring. Ironically, Joshua originally wanted to be an architectural engineer but when applying to college the program was full. He had to choose a different engineering focus. He has admitted many times that he is happy with the way things worked out and he is where he was meant to be.
