MS Electrical & Computer Engineering, Rutgers University
Why should this person be recognized for this award?
Pratul has been able to successfully lead the integration of collaborative robots into a highly manual assembly line and seamlessly integrate with current material flow and equipment. He captured tribal knowledge and undocumented steps to allow the equipment to handle abnormal scenarios and efficiently transition the process. His deep understanding of machine safety, industrial communications and controls allowed him to succeed in this high-volume application.
Achievements, Advancement & Career-related Industry Contributions
During his grad school, Pratul worked on prototyping a robotic solution for underwater gliders and published his theory work in the International Conference on Robotics and Automation. Pratul joined Masimo with 5 years of experience at TE Connectivity where he won Innovation awards for robotic assembly and safety for robotic cells. At Masimo, in the year of 2020 when Covid started, Pratul designed the Controls for a proprietary test equipment to test remote monitoring solutions developed by Masimo for covid patients. In the meantime, he has worked with engineers and management to create a standardized automation equipment build process. This will help current and new team members with a structured format to take projects from concept to production. With his past experience in machine safety, he also has helped drive the importance of machine safety and implemented processes within the automation group to help engineers assess and handle safety for each project. He is currently involved in deploying the first collaborative robot project with multi-robot synchronization within the company which will help improve quality, yield and overall plant efficiency along with opening a path to other robotic applications in future for Masimo.
Non-work-related Activities & Hobbies
Pratul likes to learn new outdoor activities, one of which is snowboarding that he learned in the last few years. He also likes to go hiking, kayaking or rollerblading with his friends. Although his love for cricket since childhood has not faded away and plays whenever he gets a chance.
- He is eager to learn skateboarding, hoping the technique required may be similar to snowboarding.
- He is also excited about the use of AI in manufacturing related to machine vision, data analytics, IoT, etc.
Why did they choose this career?
“The field of controls is applicable in diverse applications in both theory and practice ranging from economics to space robotics. I was lucky to be mentored by professors in school that showed me how mathematical equations in Control theory applied to real world problems. From working in industry, I learnt how to make some of those equations work and in a robust manner. This marriage between hardware and software to connect the virtual world with the real world and create diverse applications is hard to find in other fields. You actually get to see your code physically move things.”
