Why should this person be recognized for this award?

The industrial world has a history of modernizing its process controls to keep production running efficiently and safely while minimizing downtime. Yet many are locked in established solutions that are costly and lack innovation and interoperability. In contrast, open-source software provides freedom from vendor lock-ins and adapts to ever-changing system requirements and has enabled developers building modern data historians to deliver on the digital transformation hype. A key to this success is the Telegraf project that Jess manages, which has produced over 300 plugins (OPC-UA, MQTT, ModBus, etc.) that makes real-time access to OT data easy.

Achievements, Advancement & Career-related Industry Contributions

Jess is a part of many programs that focus on being a strong leader and supporting her teams, a passion that stems from her love and experience with teaching. One example includes leading as the director of Quality Engineering, nonprofit and education clouds at Salesforce. In this role, Jess goes above just providing access to training and offering career advice but rather creates peer learning cultures to drive improvement, growth and engagement among her teams.

Non-work-related Activities & Hobbies

Jess contributes to the software development and testing community outside of her work at Influx through teaching courses in Differentiated Management, a methodology she developed while at Salesforce.org that she continues to use at Influx, and in Company Software Testing Strategy. Jess has delivered her courses at Star West, Star East and Star Canada conferences, to audiences in multiple industries including electrical, mechanical, and marine software engineering managers and leaders.

Interesting Details

  • In addition to her work within software engineering, Jess is an active violinist and violist, who has performed with the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony and the Massapequa Philharmonic.
  • Jess also teaches Python to kids and teens at Queensborough Community College, and develops curriculum for teachers to use in their STEM classrooms.

Why did they choose this career?

Jess chose software engineering because she is a people-oriented problem solver who loves to work with inquisitive people to solve complex problems with software.
