FDT technology becomes IEC 62453, supporting interoperability among controls,  instruments

FDT technology gains IEC International Standard approval to help provide standardized easy-to-deploy field interfaces for automation, controls, and instrumentation, increasing interoperability.

Brussels, Belgium – The FDT Group AISBL announced June 19 that the FDT specification unanimously passed the vote of the international standardization community represented by 26 national committees to become an International IEC Standard - IEC 62453. FDT technology aims to provide an open and non proprietary interface for the integration of field devices with engineering, automation and asset management systems to make human machine interfaces, instrumentation, and other devices more interoperable. In addition to the member countries of the IEC SC 65E Sub-Committee, 8 more countries have voluntarily approved all parts of the FDT specification, the FDT group says. All documents will soon be available by the IEC. The move seems likely to help original equipment manufacturers, end-users, and system integrators create standardized easy-to-deploy field interfaces for automation, controls, and instrumentation.
Klaus-Peter Lindner, vice president for Associations and Standardization in the FDT Group says: “By putting this stake in the ground, FDT Group has fulfilled its primary goal to establish FDT as an acknowledged worldwide standard.” He continues “The unanimous acceptance by the national committees in addition to the voluntary positive voting by nations not being directly involved in the standardization process shows the interest and support that FDT has gained today.”
ARC Advisory Group research director Wil Chin commented, “The formal approval as an IEC standard coupled with the adoption by virtually all automation suppliers will accelerate the already robust adoption of FDT technology in the process, hybrid and discrete industries.”
The FDT Group will continue to concentrate on maintaining and enhancing the FDT technology according to end users feedback and emerging new technologies. Annual Salary Survey

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.
