Ethernet extender line adds PoE and managed models

Deploys IP cameras and other Ethernet devices beyond Ethernet’s 100-meter limit (up to 6,250 meters without PoE, 1,900 meters with PoE), over existing Cat5 cable or telephone copper wire.

B&B Electronics Manufacturing Company, Inc. expanded its family of industrial-grade Elinx Ethernet Extenders with models featuring built-in Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) and network management (called managed) capabilities. Using existing copper wire infrastructure (Cat5 cable or two straight wires from the telephone line) to avoid the cost and hassle of fiber or new construction, B and B Electronics’ Elinx Ethernet Extenders allow system integrator, engineering and IT groups to simply and inexpensively deploy remote security cameras, IP phones and other Ethernet devices beyond Ethernet’s 100-meter (328 ft) limit. In addition to the distance limitation, the new PoE+ models also overcome the challenge of powering remote devices placed nowhere near a power source by providing power directly from the extended Ethernet port.

Three new PoE+ 10/100 Mbps models extend Ethernet connections up to 1900 meters (6,248 ft) and power remote devices directly. EIRP-Extend offers one PoE+ port; EIRP-Extend-2 offers two; and EIRP-Extend-4 offers two PoE+ ports plus two standard ports. All offer flexible redundant wide voltage inputs 24 to 48 V dc, via terminal block, or extender port via RJ11 or terminal block.

Also extending Ethernet connections up to 1900 meters (6,248 ft), B&B Electronics’ two new managed models allow IT and network engineers to monitor remote communications via web browser and SNMP, preventing unneeded monitoring visits to remote locations. EIRM-Extend is a single-port extender; EIRM-Extend-8 is a two-port extender that is also an eight-port Ethernet switch. Both offer flexible extension port connectivity (RJ11 or terminal block) and dual power ports (12 to 48 V dc) via terminal block connections.

The company’s existing unmanaged line features a new, long-range SHDSL Ethernet extender for 10/100 networks, EIDM-Extend-2, extending Ethernet connections up to 6,250 meters (20,500 ft or 3.9 miles). Other unmanaged models extend Ethernet connections up to 2,600 meters (8,530 ft) via coaxial cable, or up to 1,900 meters (6,232 ft) over a pair of unused straight copper wires.

B&B Electronics’ Elinx Ethernet Extenders run Point-to-Point or Point-to-Multipoint, require two extenders (one at each of the extension points), and operate over a wide temperature range (-40 to 75 degrees C). All models support the IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u standards. The PoE+ models support the 802.3at PoE+ standard issued in 2009. All models feature a DIP switch to configure each unit (local or remote mode), status LEDs for monitoring and connection status, and all but the long-range EIDM-Extend-2 are DIN rail or panel mountable.

The company’s Ethernet extenders are designed for rugged applications such as industrial and building automation, SCADA, traffic control, point-of-sale, CCTV to IP, surveillance/security and warehousing. Models are available to meet numerous industry standards, including heavy industrial 61000-6-2 EMC standards, UL508, and NEMA TS1/TS2 environmental requirements for traffic control equipment. Many models are also shock, vibration and freefall tested.
