Ryan Stoianowski, LEED AP, 29

Senior Program Manager, ComEd, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.

University of Michigan, BS Industrial and Operations Engineering

Stoianowski oversees the retrocommissioning (RCx) program for Chicago-based electrical utility company ComEd. Under his guidance, the RCx program grew from a small pilot program to one of the largest of its kind in the country within 18 months. He drew from his sustainable engineering experience as the director of sustainable construction for Willis Building Co. and his Six Sigma Black Belt training from ComEd to develop various analyses to monitor program quality. This process incorporated customer feedback, cost effectiveness, program activity, and overall work quality into a scoring system that provided feedback for participating engineering firms. He created standard calculation templates and a list of best practices, and he suggested a number of operational changes that have resulted in increased participation. When Stoianowski penned the final Six Sigma project report, 96% of customers rated their satisfaction at 8 or more on a scale of 1 to 10, and no customers rated their satisfaction below 6. Stoianowski is also expanding the scope of the program to include industrial processes and continuous commissioning. He worked on the program design, infrastructure, and marketing/communication plans and launched the program ahead of schedule; it is already delivering energy savings to ComEd customers. He has presented program practices at a number of venues, including the USGBC Chicago chapter, National Conference on Building Commissioning, Federal Utility Partnership Workgroup Conference, ComEd Energy Efficiency Expo, and an online video feature for Consulting-Specifying Engineer. ComEd’s RCx program was awarded with the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance’s Inspiring Efficiency IMPACT Award, and the company has further tasked Stoianowski with improving other energy-efficiency programs. After work and on the weekends, he volunteers at his church, organizing college and career nights, speed networking, and team sports. This summer, you can find him grilling in the backyard and spending time with his wife Julene and his two kids, Lorilyn and Daniel.
