Pirelli Tyre, Milan, Italy, manufacturer of high-performance car tires, opened its second factory in the Shandong Province of China. The new industrial facility is located in the same area as the company’s truck tire factory, which opened in 2005.
The facility’s inauguration took place in front of Riccardo Sessa, Italian ambassador to the People’s Republic of China; Marco Tronchetti Provera, chairman of Pirelli; Francesco Gori, CEO and general manager of Pirelli Tyre; and Niu Yshun, chairman of Yinhe Group.
The $100 million, 70,000 sq. meter facility has a manufacturing capacity of 3 million pieces per year, with areas sufficient to contain manufacturing expansion up to 10 million pieces per year and a 1,000-employee workforce. The Yanzhou plant will use non-robotized technologies for the production of their mid- and high-performance tires.
Pirelli’s expansion marks an effort to reach a growing number of automobile owners in China. The 10% per year GDP growth per year between 2008 and 2010, improved quality of life, better road infrastructure, and a trend toward lower prices all contribute to the rapid rise of the automobile market in China.
