IIoT Series: Part 1: Infrastructure, standards and systems

Infrastructure must precede application, and at end of day, the Industrial Internet of things is constructed based on a plethora of industrial computing standards that define its infrastructure.

In this course, Arlen Nipper, co-inventor of the MQTT messaging protocol, defines and sorts out the standards options for users, based on market surveys, trending data and other relevant parameters. Nipper is joined by Benjamin Cabé, a program manager at the Eclipse Foundation. Dedicated to open systems proliferation, the Eclipse Foundation includes a community of developers, tools and standards contributing to creation of a platform that benefits companies implementing IIoT applications.

Of special interest is Eclipse Tahu, which addresses the existence of legacy industrial control systems, protocols and infrastructures and provides a much needed definition of how best to apply standard protocols into existing industrial environments. Other protocols, including Restful APIs and CoAp, are also discussed.


Learning objectives:

  • Define open source software, its development model and how its role in industrial computing has changed in recent years.
  • Delineate what messaging standards, messaging protocols and industry standards are relevant to those looking to implement IIoT in industrial environments.
  • Introduce attendees to the Eclipse Foundation and advise as to the role that industry standards bodies play in supporting greater efficacy in integrating of systems and interoperability of software.
  • Introduce the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) industry standard which has proven key to allowing integration and interoperability at the IIoTedge, and its embodiment in the open standard Eclipse Tahu.
