GE Healthcare to add automated protein separation media production
GE Healthcare's Life Science division in Uppsala, Sweden has placed an order for automation systems to be used in the production of protein separation media. The automation systems are part of the development of a new production plant to meet the increasing demand for separation media based on agarose and dextran. Worth approximately $4 million, the automation is based on ABB's 800xA Extended Automation system, which provides control and monitoring of tanks and reactors, batch control plus control functions for automatic valves, stirrers and analog measurement signals for the process. The systems also include functions for the assembling and handling process, operational data management with functions for reporting and archiving. This project will also take advantage of the ABB PCEquipment Library, a generic, reusable software suite for batch applications that distributes the control intelligence throughout the control hierarchy, thus enabling truly generic, pre-tested and re-usable library objects to be provided for units, equipment modules and phases.
ASHRAE winter meeting centers on energy efficiency

Labor Day report provides snapshot of U.S. economy
While the National Association of Manufacturers’ annual Labor Day Report is good news for manufacturers, soaring energy costs are hurting manufacturing workers at the pump and in their paychecks. “The report provides a snapshot of the U.S. economic performance over the past year,” said John Engler, president and CEO of NAM. Manufacturing production increased at its fastest pace in six years and jobs on the factory floor have posted their strongest gains since 1998. “But while workers’ total compensation has continued to outpace inflation, wages have not,” Huether said. “Surging energy prices have propelled inflation at a faster pace than workers’ take-home pay and have resulted in declines in real wages for working Americans.” “Over the past year energy prices have risen 23% due to increased global demand, limited domestic supplies, natural disasters and global instability,” Engler said.

Bulk bag unloader

Adjustable drain valve
The EDV-2006 terminator solenoid drain valve removes condensate from air systems. It drains compressed air equipment, including filters, dryers, drop legs, receiver tanks, separators and after coolers. Ultrasound simplifies steam trap inspection
The cost of leaking steam traps can be huge. If steam, for example, costs $5/1000 lb, a leaking trap with a 1/8 in. orifice in a 50-psi system would waste 29.8 lb/hr, or 260,333 lb/yr. The energy waste from this trap would be $1302 annually. In a system with 100 traps and an estimated failure rate of 25%, the annual cost would be $32,541.
Higher costs already showing impact
Factory managers who need to tighten their budgets for operating supplies will find the going gets tougher in 2003. That's because the margin cushion that suppliers built this past year has been rapidly disappearing.
