Thermal modeling protects motors without overtripping
Today’s modern microprocessor-based protection relays offer much more than the standard motor protection provided by electromechanical relays. Advanced features include motor-heating, time-to-trip and countdown-to-restart calculations — plus real-time diagnostics. Even with the calculating power of microprocessor-based protection, most relays today still attempt to provide motor protection just by measuring current. The various manufacturers’ models calculate motor heating by thermal capacity or thermal register, where 0% is completely cooled and 100% is the trip threshold. This thermal capacity is accumulated based on the measured current such that during motor starting, protection is essentially a function of the current squared multiplied by time (an I2t element), with maximum starting time dictated by the hot motor safe-stall time. Limits of accuracy While this type of protection dates back to electromechanical relays, the I2t model does not result in the most accurate motor protection, and limits true available horsepower.

Google over Microsoft: Consumers rank Corporate America’s reputation in Harris survey of 60 most visible companies
Not only has the stock market lost ground since last fall, but so has the reputation of Corporate America in the eyes of consumers. Seven out of 11 industries saw their reputation decline last year from 2006, and 16 of the companies with the worst marks fell even further, according to the Harris Interactive Reputation Quotient (RQ) survey. But despite a slide in Corporate America's image among consumers, the RQ found a strong statistical correlation between a company's overall reputation and the likelihood that consumers will purchase, recommend, or invest in a company or its products and services. The RQ surveys thousands of American consumers in a two-step process (online and telephone interviews) to first identify the 60 most visible companies, and subsequently rank these companies based on their reputation in six categories: Emotional Appeal, Products & Services, Social Responsibility, Vision & Leadership, Workplace Environment, and Financial Performance. While the RQ found that certain industry sector reputations—including airlines, consumer products, insurance/financial services, pharmaceutical, and retail—are perceived to have plummeted since 2006, the reputations of the most visible companies remained relatively stable. And while the overall the reputation of American companies continues to decline, a few companies are bucking the trend and building their reputations in this tough environment. The survey also provides a road map for what areas linked to corporate reputation have the most impact on consumers. According to Ken Powell, CEO, General Mills , "Reputation can be measured in recognition, employee recruitment and retention—even stock price multiple.

Ethernet servo drives speed food tray sealing
Ethernet-compatible servo motor drives are underpinning a breakthrough in the speed and flexibility of food tray sealing. The availability of this new generation of networked motion control technology provided the platform for Ishida to re-think its machine control system architecture and achieve step-change improvements in speed. Instead of the combination of servo and pneumatic actuation axes used on previous machines, Ishida's latest QX-1100 tray sealer uses servo motors throughout, controlled using Ethernet-compatible MicroFlex e100 drives from Baldor Electric Co. The speed and predictability of movement provided by the servos allows Ishida to dramatically accelerate the throughput for this form of food processing automation, allowing sealing speeds of up to 200 trays/minute — up to twice as fast as many existing solutions. The 100 Mbits/second speed of the network also dramatically simplifies the control system, allowing the machine's complex motion to be managed by a single controller with extremely simple cabling.

Study finds global growth potential in belt, chain drives market
Rapidly expanding markets of Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific offer tremendous growth potential for manufacturers of belt and chain drives in North America. The challenge before manufacturers is to ensure a timely footprint in the emerging markets without losing focus on the established ones. Toward this end, proportionate allocation of resources in line with balanced growth strategy becomes imperative. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan ( www.powertransmissions.frost.com ), North American belt and chain drives market, reveals that revenue in this market totaled $2.09 billion in 2004 and projects to reach $2.79 billion in 2011. Another crucial issue is the rapid commoditization of belt and chain drive products, which leads to adverse price pressures and compels manufacturers to lower product prices. “Differentiation of the offerings in terms of better after-sales service and technological advancements can help mitigate the effects of price pressures,” says Frost & Sullivan power transmissions team leader Bhavdeep Virdee.

Keep compressed air system draining on task and on time
One of the most common problems with down-stream compressed air equipment is a service report of excessive liquid—or death by drowning. Temperature control basics
A temperature controller is merely a part of a bigger system that depends on feedback (Fig. 1). How motor efficiencies affect system designs
A plant's new project requirements: "Make it 25% faster, with 50% fewer rejects," Another requirement could be, "lower energy consumption by 30%." Plants are far more concerned with "parts per minute" than "watts per part." In systems such as packaging, finishing, or a new production line, the largest energy consumers are perhaps electric motors and servos.
