Predictive maintenance 101

It’s no surprise that plant maintenance can be time-consuming and expensive. It also is understood that proper maintenance practices are critical to help maximize equipment uptime and protect the bottom line. However, many practices take the 'break-fix’ approach, including preventive maintenance, performed on a time-based or scheduled scenario regardless of actual need.

Improved pump efficiency goes right to the bottom line

If we were told that we could lower our home energy bills by up to 50%, most of us would jump at the opportunity. That could mean an extra $1,000 in our pockets, instead of in the pocket of the utility company — a significant annual saving. Look at a similar industrial plant scenario. Many industries are extremely pump intensive.

Making production data work for you

Each year, manufacturers lose nearly $20 billion — or almost 5% of total production in North America — due to unscheduled downtime. Despite the increasing sales of data collection systems, this loss suggests that manufacturers still don’t know what is causing line problems and equipment failure. Over the last four to five years, manufacturers have invested heavily in sophisticated technology such as HMI and SCADA packages to help them better visualize and control the manufacturing process. However, these systems are designed to be an operator interface to your control system, and often have limited data collection and storage capabilities.

Compared with dc theory, which was discussed in the May issue, the subject of ac theory is more complex. A dc current flows only one direction, hence the name direct current. Belt and chain tensioners

Power transmission belts and chains stretch in operation, up to 6% for belts and 3% for chains. If not compensated for, this stretch can lower drive efficiency down to 93%. Stretch also leads to power loss due to slipping belts, sheave wear, chain whip, and overloaded bearings. Belts and chains that run slack typically have their useful life reduced by 30%.
