2011 Product of the Year awards
The 2011 Product of the Year gold, silver, and bronze award winners are honored below and in the April 2012 print edition of Plant Engineering magazine.
Plant Engineering‘s 2011 Product of the Year program consisted of 14 categories with 46 winners (3 ties for Bronze awards and 1 Grand award). The awards were presented to the winners at the 2012 Engineering Awards in Manufacturing dinner hosted by both Plant Engineering and Control Engineering.

Features include wireless signals that can be passed through doors, walls, and floors. The operator can remotely control machines at a distance of up to 25 m. Equipment operators have the added option to send a one-time radio message to one or multiple receivers, or sync up to 32 push buttons with one receiver.
Totally Integrated Automation Portal from Siemens Industry, Inc.
The Totally Integrated Automation Portal is a software engineering framework that enables users to develop and commission automation systems quickly and intuitively, eliminating traditional time-consuming and costly integration of separate software packages. The TIA Portal is suitable for both first-time users and experienced users. The design of TIA Portal is based on advanced object-oriented software architecture and centralized data management, providing data consistency by automatically avoiding data entry errors. Users can find data and program blocks across the entire automation project using a project-wide cross-reference system, which reduces the time to troubleshoot and debug a typical software project.
Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus 6 from Rockwell Automation, Inc.
The Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus 6 human machine interface terminal was designed for large-scale applications where there is a need to monitor, control and display information graphically, and quickly understand that information. This version of the HMI features several new features including more memory for significantly faster refresh rates and more on-device storage. The HMI includes the latest FactoryTalk View Machine Edition and FactoryTalk ViewPoint software running on the Windows CE 6.0 operating system, which provides new time-saving design enhancements, including a new extensive graphics library, enhanced color animation capability and access to a multi-language font library.
Levalign Expert from Ludeca, Inc.
Levalign Expert is designed to measure the flatness and straightness of machine bases and foundations, split machine casings, as well as flatness and parallelism of circular, rectangular, and odd-shaped flanges. The system consists of a self-leveling motorized rotating laser and a sensor that interfaces wirelessly with a geometric measurement computer. The surface of the measured component is displayed in full color 3-D graphics for accurate evaluation. Features like InfiniSplice allow measurement files to be merged and let the rotating laser reposition to another location during measurement to overcome obstructions.
It’s the fourth utility, and one of the areas in a plant that can provide dramatic savings in costs and in productivity. The products this year help plant managers do just that. Here are this year’s winners in Compressed Air:
Atto Super Air Nozzle from EXAIR Corp.
The Model 1108 SS Atto Super Air Nozzle has been engineered for precise blowoff with efficient, high-volume, high-velocity airflow. The nozzle measures only 0.5-in. with a diameter of only 0.16-in., permitting installation in tight spaces. High amplification of airflow and a strong blowing force of 2.0 oz are achieved with minimal air consumption of 2.5 SCFM at 80 PSIG. The airflow cannot be blocked, which meets the OSHA standard for dead-end pressure, 29 CFR 1910.242(b). Sound level is low at 58 dBA, which meets OSHA noise requirement 29 CFR 1910.95(a) and is CE compliant.
Finite T-Series from Parker Hannifin Corp.
The Finite T-Series top-loading compressed air filters are designed to remove solid and liquid contaminants up to 99.995%, which allows for easy element replacement. The filter housings have been designed to make element replacement faster, reducing downtime and increasing production volumes. The loading filters are designed to protect internal components of a refrigerated dryer by removing compressor oil carryover, which can compromise a dryer’s operation. The Finite T-series meets OEM requirements and is ideal for usage in limited spaces and for mounting inside cabinets.

Alternative materials, including EPDM, fluoroelastomer, and silicone, are available for services up to 250 F. X$D Ultra 841 IEC from GE Energy
X$D Ultra 841 IEC motors meet or exceed the intent of the IEEE 841-2009 Standard and are designed and rated for Zone 2 and Division 2 hazardous applications with a T3 temperature code. Another feature includes corrosion protection. The motor frame, fan cover, endshield, and conduit box are cast iron for severe duty. Rotor surfaces are coated to resist interior rust to help maintain performance. The Ultra 841 IEC motor is available for voltages of 200 V to 690 V. The motors are available at variable speed or at 50 Hz to 60 Hz.
Allen-Bradley NEMA Centerline MCCs with EtherNet/IP from Rockwell Automation, Inc.
The Centerline motor control centers feature an integrated EtherNet/IP network, giving manufacturers remote access to production information. Leveraging a single, standard network simplifies communication for the entire enterprise and provides users with the flexibility to control, configure, and collect data from any point in the system. This allows personnel to safely monitor, troubleshoot, and diagnose the MCC without exposing the user to potentially dangerous conditions and power equipment. Centerline low-voltage MCCs offer a rugged, high-performance packaging solution.
Sirius 3RB24 from Siemens Industry, Inc.
The Sirius 3RB24 electronic overload relays feature IO-Link for enhanced communication. Contactors, connected to the Sirius 3RB24, provide integrated motor protection and superior communication advantages, including readout of motor current and diagnostics. Rotary switches allow for easy setting of the device’s motor current and the required trip class. A consortium made up of the leading suppliers of automation products has come together to support the new concept in all areas of sensors, actuators, and control technology. IO-Link represents an open, standardized, and manufacturer-independent system for the uniform connection of sensors and switching devices to the control level.

Gold Series Dust Collector from Camfil Farr APC
The Gold Series cartridge dust collector, with an optional feature for integrated HEPA safety monitoring filter, is designed to prevent collected dust from re-entering the workspace if there is a leak in the primary filtering system. Each module incorporates two HEPA filters capable of handling 2,500 cfm of air per filter and rated to remove 99.97% of airborne particles of 0.3 micron in diameter and larger. The Gold Series’ integrated design maintains the after-filter at negative pressure, preventing contaminated air from escaping. The design allows access to the HEPA filters and easy change-out through the platform used to access the primary filters.
Ultra-Drain Seal from UltraTech International, Inc.
The Ultra-Drain Seal is a transparent drain protector that allows responders to see stoppage of spills. The clear material provides an unobstructed view of the covered drains, enabling responders to quickly see if spills are entering the drain through cracks in the surface, imperfections in the grating, or other irregularities that can break the seal. The reinforcing mesh is “sandwiched” between layers of polyurethane that increase durability and resistance to tearing. The unique, urethane construction allows the pad to deform and seal off most drains, temporarily sealing to any smooth surface.
SCW Wash-down Curtain Wall from Zoneworks
The SCW Wash-down Curtain Wall is constructed of durable and cleanable, 18-oz white vinyl fabric and is designed for use in operations where compliance with federal food regulations is paramount. To eliminate the potential for bacteria to accumulate, the fabric curtain is manufactured without stitched seams. No Velcro is used to connect the curtain wall panels. All components and fasteners used to suspend the SCW Wash-down Curtain Wall are made of stainless steel. Additionally, it holds up to wet and harsh conditions that occur when production equipment is cleaned as part of HACCP best practices.

TVA Target Variable Area flowmeter from Spirax Sarco, Inc.
The Target Variable Area flowmeter for use on saturated steam is ideal for applications where there are large variations in flow rates. The integral electronics unit removes the need for a differential pressure transmitter, impulse lines, and additional equipment. A built-in temperature sensor provides full density compensation and enables power, energy, flow, total flow, pressure, and temperature to be displayed on the on-board LCD display. All flow parameters are fully configured on an integral keypad so no additional tools or configurations are required for setup and commissioning.
MegaSys from Gates Corp.
The MegaSys constant-pressure hydraulic hoses are easy to handle and can be routed in tight, confined spaces during installation. The spiral-wire hoses can be bent up to one-half and wire-braid hoses up to two-thirds the SAE specification, thereby saving overall hose assembly length and cost by as much as 64%. MegaSys hoses can handle biodegradable hydraulic fluids like polyester, polyglycol, and vegetable oil, as well as standard petroleum-based fluids. These hoses are found on machine tools, injection molding and die cast equipment, hydrostatic conveyor drives, and plant floor mobile equipment.
PIG Latching Lid for Poly Drums from New Pig Corp.
The PIG Latching Lid for Poly Drums has been designed specifically to fit open-head poly drums. This lid opens and closes easily with one hand—no need to remove and reattach the drum ring, lid, or bolt to access drum contents. The lid also features a 3-in.-wide EVA gasket and locking mechanism that not only completely seals the lid to help keep drum contents dry and pure, but also helps prevent vapor emissions. Two sets of interchangeable drum spacers and extra wide-wide gasket design allow the lid to fit the five most common poly drum designs.

The CITY MULTI VRF Dedicated Outdoor Air System is designed to supply outdoor ventilation air to a building independent of the HVAC air distribution or conditioning system. The DOAS preconditions air for introduction into downstream HVAC units, lessening the load on HVAC systems. The DOAS connects to a VRF outdoor unit with INVERTER-driven technology to provide energy-efficient outside air by utilizing waste heat from cooling cycles to provide reheat capability without needing an additional or supplemental energy source. The DOAS also reduces utility costs when used in conjunction with HVAC systems.
RedLINK from Mitsubishi Electric Cooling and Heating
With RedLINK technology, this wall-mounted wireless remote controller communicates through radio frequency, meaning that the wireless controller can be placed in a different room than the indoor units and that no wires need to be run through the walls. The Portable Central Controller allows users the freedom of climate control of up to 16 zones and adjustable fan speed vane positioning from anywhere in the facility. The wall-mounted controller features a traditional wall-mounted thermostat appearance and an easy-to-read backlit display with intuitive operational functions.

Aluminum Gantry Crane from Gorbel Inc.
The lightweight Aluminum Gantry Crane is the solution when you want to keep your employees safe from heavy lifting without adding a costly permanent crane. Its portability makes it a cost-effective solution for areas where lifting equipment is needed on an infrequent basis. The Aluminum Gantry Crane can handle loads from 250 lbs to 2 tons, features an adjustable standard span of up to 20 ft, and has an adjustable height under boom of 7 to 12 ft. Safe-Bump Forklift Bumper from Liftow Limited

The Laser Scanner Focus3D is a high-performance 3D laser scanner for detailed measurement and documentation with intuitive touchscreen control that makes it easy to operate as a digital camera. Laser Scanner Focus3D offers 976,000 measurement points/second for 3D documentation of large environments, such as accident sites, factories, and process plants. The Focus3D is an entirely self-contained unit weighing only 11 lbs and measuring 9.5 x 8 x 4 in. The flexible interfaces of the included scan processing software enable connection to AutoCAD and other CAD applications such as Rhino, Microstation, Nemetschek, and ArchiCAD.
KEYTROLLER LCD601 from Keytroller, LLC
The LCD601 is a color LCD access and monitoring system for forklifts and equipment. The LCD601 maintains OSHA regulations by automating daily required pre-shift checklists and by scheduling driver recurrent training. Damage from reckless driving is dramatically reduced because the device tracks impact and speed-logging abuse, creating driver accountability. Maintenance scheduling on the device insures PMs are done by a date or hour meter reading. Wireless text messages shown on the LCD display can be sent to individual vehicles or the entire fleet, further improving the productivity of the handling operation.

The SGi Bearing Isolator incorporates shaft grounding technology to offer maintenance-free and reliable bearing protection by preventing bearing contamination, lubrication loss, and electrical damage. Magnum Remote Racking Device (MRR1000) from Eaton
The MRR1000 remote racking device provides a means of remotely inserting or removing any drawout circuit breaker in the Magnum DS family of air circuit breakers (ACBs) to help mitigate arc flash exposure. The MRR1000 permits the operator to remotely open and close a breaker from up to 25 ft away during the rack-in or rack-out process, a distance well beyond the arc flash boundary for traditional LV switchgear. It also allows for manual operator of the breaker as well as racking.
