SKF to expand focus

SKF revealed that it intends to expand its image as a leader in bearing technology to the “knowledge engineering company.” In addition to this statement, the company also announced several new services and product lines including its e-maintenance initiative and made-to-order bearings. The e-maintenance, SKF’s Web-enabled monitoring system and maintenance processes, is a solution for companies seeking to establish a world-class and cost-effective condition-based machine monitoring program. According to Scott Brady, SKF’s Director of Product marketing, users can realize increased machine reliability, uptime and overall profitability without large infrastructure investments. The e-maintenance process integrates Internet technology with SKF Machine Analyst data management and analysis software; the @ptitude Industrial Decision Support system; and any of the SKF portable online condition monitoring systems. The system allows for data on machinery conditions at one or more facilities to be collected by a company’s designated technician or by an automated system and then uploaded easily and accurately to a remote Web server for trending and analysis by SKF reliability engineers. Reports and/or work order requests are generated for recommended action and dispatched to all relevant sites. Benefits of e-maintenance include the 24/7 capability to monitor equipment and upload data for analysis to the SKF Diagnostics Center around-the-clock; the centralized data repository accessible to management and staff regardless of their locations; more timely data on machine conditions; and minimized investment further eliminating any need for typically redundant hardware, software, and manpower. The technology is ideal for mobile applications, such as the railway, mining and shipping industries and for unmanned, remote locations such as wind farms and pumping stations. SKF also announced its Made-To-Order (MTO) program, which is available through MRC Bearing Services.

The future of the CMMS/EAM industry: A look at the National Plant Engineering & Facilities Management Show

Last year yielded mixed results for the CMMS/EAM industry. Some vendors had a respectable year despite uncertain economic times, while others struggled. The same can be said for their customers. I wasn't surprised by the continuing downward trend in vendor participation and attendance at the National Plant Engineering & Facilities Maintenance Show (NPEFM) last March in Chicago.

The wireless revolution invades the plant

Since the invention of the cellular mobile network by AT&T Bell Labs in the 1970s, the demand to provide voice communications to anyone, anywhere, at anytime has increased, with an explosion in consumer-level products during the past decade. The installed mobile phone base is approaching 1 billion, and soon the number of mobile phones will exceed hard-wired ones.

Information Engineering

Web-based architectures — why should you care? There is a not-so-quiet revolution blazing its way across the IT world. It is a concept called web services, and it involves constructing applications that are designed to operate on the internet. This transformation shouldn't be confused with enhancing or enabling existing applications so users can access them via a web browser.

Good reasons to join a skilled workforce:security, earnings, quality of life, and satisfaction

A recent Plant Engineering editorial on today's skills shortage (July 1999, p 10) prompted a reader to respond with the question: "As parents, why would you encourage your children to join the 'skilled workforce?'" Together, the editorial and the question prompted Author Tom Huey to give the matter of skills shortages some serious consideration. His thought-provoking remarks on this issue are presented here. Why would a parent encourage his children to join the skilled workforce ? I can give four good reasons: job security, earnings potential, quality of life, and job satisfaction. Growing roots Job security may not now be at the top of the hit parade for every 20-yr-old entering the workforce, but eventually it will be for many. In a recent poll by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 72% of the respondents said that they would like the security of long-term employment with one company.
