TRAM conference looks at advanced machining issues

Following a successful debut at IMTS 2012 with more than 300 conference participants, Trends in Advanced Machining, Manufacturing and Materials (TRAM) ’14 will again take place at IMTS at Chicago’s McCormick Place on Sept. 10-11. The two-day event will be part of the overall 2014 IMTS show, Sept. 8-13.

Presented by the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, The Association For Manufacturing Technology (AMT), Gardner Business Media’s Modern Machine Shop and sister publication High-Performance Composites, the conference program will focus on upcoming trends and advancements in manufacturing technology within the aerospace industry.

TRAM ’14 will examine the implications of trends focusing on these key areas:

• Advanced Machining Processes to produce more complex parts for the latest designs in aircraft structures and engines, as well as other industries that can benefit from similar machining processes. The conference will examine the impact of these processes and techniques.
• Advanced Manufacturing Technologies have been introduced and traditional methods have been improved. The conference will consider the effectiveness and benefits of using new and developing technologies.
• Advanced Materials are being used, including composites and titanium alloys, which produce lighter, stronger structures. Aircraft engines are using materials that enable them to work at higher operating temperatures, increasing their efficiency and operating performance. The conference will examine the impact of these materials and the new manufacturing technologies being developed.

Greg Hyslop, the vice president and general manager of Boeing Research and Technology, the central R&D unit of the company, will be the keynote speaker on Sept. 10. TRAM will also feature Ricardo Traven, Boeing’s chief test pilot for the F/A-18, and Peter Hoffman, vice president of international property management. The Boeing Co. is the event sponsor.
