Rumors continue to circulate that Volkswagen will select Alabama as the site for its new U.S. plant. Alabama, Tennessee and Michigan were the finalists for a new U.S. plant that company officials hope will help VW expand its presence in the U.S.

German industry newsletter Automobilwoche reported Saturday that Alabama had won the contract.

Company officials said Monday that no final decision had been reached, and that an announcement was expected as early as July 15.

Local sources said the site for the Alabama plant is in a portion of eastern Limestone County recently annexed by Huntsville.

Sources cite the recent influx of auto manufacturing into Alabama, as well as a production facility for automotive steel.
