EPA enforces stringent requirements for containing and disposing of lead paint and minimizing VOCs from coatings. Thermal spray coatings do not come under these requirements because they don’t produce VOCs. Spray coatings have a life cycle of 20-30 yr, while the best life for a painted surface averages 10 yr. The difference is a coating cost savings of 12:1.
