NFPA and IEEE collaborate

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) have agreed to work on an initiative to fund and support research and testing to increase the understanding of the arc flash phenomena. The results of this project will provide information to enhance electrical safety standards that predict the hazard, and provide practical safeguards for employees in the workplace.

Arc flash is an electric current that passes through air when insulation or isolation between electrified conductors is no longer sufficient to withstand the applied voltage.

The flash is immediate, but the result of these incidents can cause severe injury including burns. Each year more than 2000 people are treated in burn centers with severe arc flash injuries.

NFPA is the developer of NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace , 2004 edition, which addresses electrical safety requirements for employee workplaces for the practical safeguarding of employees. The standard covers installation, safe work practices and procedures, and safety-related maintenance requirements, as well as safety installation and work practices for special electrical equipment.

IEEE is the developer of IEEE 1584-2002, Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard Calculations , which provides techniques for designers and facility operators to apply in determining arc-flash hazard distance and the incident energy to which employees could be exposed during their work on or near electrical equipment. It builds upon previous advancements in estimating arc flash incident energy and is useful in meeting the requirements of NFPA 70E.

NEMA and NECA working on 2nd joint NEIS

NECA/NEMA 605, Nonmetallic Underground Utility Duct will be the second standard jointly developed by National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). Currently out to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) letter ballot, this joint standard is expected to be published in the spring of 2005.

This is the second time that NECA and NEMA have teamed to develop a joint National Electrical Installation Standard (NEIS). The first was NECA/NEMA 105-2002, Recommended Practice for Installing Metal Cable Tray Systems . Many of the National Electrical Installation Standards have been developed in collaboration with other industry expert groups such as Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA), Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), and Steel Tube Institute (STI).

Schneider Electric has launched its Critical Power Competency Center (CPCC) to solve problems that affect mission-critical end users of electrical power by providing customized power distribution and management expertise tailored to the critical power market. The CPCC merges the expertise of the company’s Power Management Operations, product design, development and distribution, program management, engineering, power consulting, and resources from its facilities in LaVergne and Smyrna, TN, and Columbia SC.

The cross-functional team solves customers’ problems through power system design, order entry, project management, and implementation. The CPCC is also concerned with communication and coordination across multiple channels and disciplines, including generator, universal power source, and paralleling switchgear manufacturers; electrical contractors; and consulting engineers.
