Shanghai Electric Power Co. Ltd. became the first utility outside the United States to install 3M aluminum conductor composite reinforced (ACCR) transmission conductors. The conductors carry twice the current of conventional steel-core conductors of the same diameter on existing towers.

Shanghai Electric serves the Shanghai metropolitan area with more than 2,800-mW generating capacity. 3M’s ACCR increase the capacity on a key 10-mile line to meet the growing peak demand. The conductor retains its integrity after exposure to temperatures even higher than the rated continuous operating temperature of 210 C and 240 C for emergency operation. In addition, the ACCR installs on existing structures and matches the sag and tension of the existing conductor with less weight and utilities costs reduce without adding any risk to the existing system.
