2010 POY Finalists: Safety
Plant Engineering's 2010 Product of the Year finalists featured in the Safety category.
Biometric Switch
Schneider Electric’s Harmony Biometric Switch is a finger-print reading device designed specifically for industrial environments where security is highly critical to everyday functions to grant employee access to sensitive areas and machine functions. The switch reads fingerprint patterns to verify that someone is authorized to access these areas and functions through an anonymous process in which fingerprints serve only to authorize access, not confirm an individual’s identity. The switch can remember up to 200 fingerprints, including several fingers from the same operator, for additional flexibility and precision. It resists mechanical shock and vibration, and protects against EMC noise and UL light.

Safety-chock
Serco’s Manual Safety-Chock provides loading docks with a cost-effective, versatile wheel restraint solution, capable of engaging and restraining the wide range of trailers that come to the dock, including trucks with lift gates, damaged Rear Impact Guards, or different axle configurations. The Manual Safety-Chock’s patent-pending design provides up to 32,000 lbs. of restraining force. Its ergonomic handle allows easy engagement of the restraining arm, and the unique foot pedal releases the arm away from the wheel, eliminating chock pinch. The galvanized finish and rugged construction are designed for extreme weather conditions.

Remote racking system
The RRS-2-BE from CBS ArcSafe is a Remote Racking System for moveable Motor Control Center buckets. The RRS-2 BE allows the operator to remove and install MCC buckets from 25 to 150 feet away. The RRS-2 BE has custom tooling for each MCC and is easily adapted for different size and shape buckets.
Remote switch actuator
Charge-Close-Trip, a Remote Switch Actuator from CBS ArcSafe, attaches to the front of your circuit breaker with strong magnets without the need for any modification to your switchgear. This actuator allows service personnel to operate all three actions without having to stand in the arc flash hazard boundary to charge, close or trip the equipment. Once the actuator is attached and have determined the breaker is not previously charged the directions are simple: (1) Push charge button, (2) push close button, (3) push trip button.
Remote racking system
CBS ArcSafe offers a single application Remote Racking System for Square D-NW Breakers; the RRS-3-NW. This system allows the operator to install and remove NW Breakers while standing 25 to 50 feet away with a pendant station or up to 150 feet away with a radio remote pendant station. The RRS-3-NW allows the operator to safely rack the breaker with never having to open the door.
Emergency-stop push buttons
Emergency-stop push buttons are a critical component for automation systems – they are used to cease motion to help prevent injury to workers or damage to machinery. Rockwell Automation’s emergency-stop push buttons from Allen-Bradley are TUV certified for the B10d Functional Safety rating which the industry already recognizes for ingress protection sealing technology, low-voltage switching capability and excellent reliability.
Roof anchor post
The Miller Fusion Roof Anchor Post from Miller Fall Protection is a versatile single-point anchor that adapts to a wide range of roof designs including, standing seam, membrane, metal sheathing, concrete and wood. It protects the worker by maintaining a secure connection to the structure in the event of a fall while also protecting the structure during a fall with a unique energy-absorbing load distribution system. The durable design withstands the changing outdoor environment with internal components constructed of stainless steel. The steel post and base are zinc placed and powder coated for two layers of protection.
