This blog is authored by One Voice for Manufacturing, a joint effort by the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) and the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA). NTMA is a national association representing the precision custom manufacturing industry, which employs more than 440,000 skilled workers in the U.S. and generates sales in excess of $40 billion a year.
NTMA’s nearly 1,400 member companies design and manufacture special tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, gages, special machines and precision-machined parts. PMA is the full-service trade association representing the $113-billion metalforming industry of North America—the industry that creates precision metal products using stamping, fabricating, spinning, slide forming and roll forming technologies, and other value-added processes. Its nearly 900 member companies also include suppliers of equipment, materials and services to the industry.
The two associations joined forces in 2008 to combine their federal government advocacy program in order to give a voice to the thousands of middle market manufacturing companies in the country who supply tooling, components, and other manufactured products to Original Equipment Manufacturers and their Tier I and Tier II suppliers. One Voice advocates for policies that will ensure a strong manufacturing sector in the U.S.
Annual Salary Survey
After almost a decade of uncertainty, the confidence of plant floor managers is soaring. Even with a number of challenges and while implementing new technologies, there is a renewed sense of optimism among plant managers about their business and their future.
The respondents to the 2014 Plant Engineering Salary Survey come from throughout the U.S. and serve a variety of industries, but they are uniform in their optimism about manufacturing. This year’s survey found 79% consider manufacturing a secure career. That’s up from 75% in 2013 and significantly higher than the 63% figure when Plant Engineering first started asking that question a decade ago.
