The changing of the guard
Consulting-Specifying Engineer is pleased to welcome eight new members to the editorial advisory board this year.
Consulting-Specifying Engineer has, for years, had an editorial advisory board. Many readers aren’t aware that they’re the backbone of the print publication, Pure Power, and this website. Each technical article is anonymously reviewed, complimented, critiqued, ripped apart, and otherwise vetted by this team. Each board member also provides invaluable feedback on the industry, keeping the Consulting-Specifying Engineer editorial team and, in turn, its readers on track with the most valuable content.
Board members typically are professional engineers, consultants, industry experts, or all of the above. The mix of backgrounds is pretty interesting—a couple of board members specialize in data center design, a few specialize in HVAC or energy-efficiency systems, some are thoroughly knowledgeable electrical engineers, still others focus only on hospital and health care facilities, and a few are fire protection engineer rock stars. All members have years of experience, making them invaluable assets to their firm and to this board.
This board is made up entirely of volunteers. They’re invited to the board and typically retain their “seats” for 3 years, though some do for much longer. (Side note: A retiring board member asked me to see how long he’d been on the board, and write a reference for him. I found issues dating back to 1999—quite a tenure!) During that time, they write articles, present at webcasts, answer questions from the Consulting-Specifying Engineer editorial team, present at conferences and training events, and determine what you, the reader, will find in these pages.
Eventually, there must be a changing of the guard. This year, several new board members replace those who’ve been on the advisory team for years. Eight new faces have joined the board, many of whom were mentored by the departing advisory board members. This transition has occurred over 6 months, allowing the new members—many of them young up-and-comers—to gain a bit of knowledge from their colleagues and become accustomed to how the Consulting-Specifying Engineer team works.
It’s my great pleasure to welcome Peter Alspach, Thomas Brown, Jason Gerke, Danna Jensen, Kenneth Kutsmeda, Michael Mar, Brian Martin, and Randy Schrecengost to the team. With their fresh ideas and insightful input, they’ll help make Consulting-Specifying Engineer, Pure Power, and www.csemag.com even better in the months to come.

2012 Salary Survey
In a year when manufacturing continued to lead the economic rebound, it makes sense that plant manager bonuses rebounded. Plant Engineering’s annual Salary Survey shows both wages and bonuses rose in 2012 after a retreat the year before.
Average salary across all job titles for plant floor management rose 3.5% to $95,446, and bonus compensation jumped to $15,162, a 4.2% increase from the 2010 level and double the 2011 total, which showed a sharp drop in bonus.
