Problem: You need to tap into a PVC pipe with a brass fitting, but the right tapping cutter is not readily available. Can something be improvised?

Solution: Take a spare brass fitting and carefully slice in along the starting thread with a hacksaw. A little tapping die is created that makes short work of the plastic pipe.
