Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers recognizes Chicago engineer

Pedro Cevallos-Candau, the executive vice president of Primera Engineers, received the honor for his efforts in promoting math and science to the Latino community, as well as for his years as of service.

Pedro Cevallos-Candau PE, PhD, founding partner and executive vice president of Chicago-based Primera Engineers Ltd., was the recipient of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)-Chicago President’s Award. Cevallos-Candau was selected out of 1,000 potential recipients for over 25 years of dedicated service. He was also recognized for supporting efforts to help educate and promote the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to the Chicago Latino Community. 

Cevallos-Candau received the award at the SHPE-Chicago Annual Gala in May. All proceeds go toward Latino Scholarships, promoting the awareness and importance of STEM-related fields of study and the support of High School awareness of the engineering profession.

Cevallos-Candau has been a leader for the empowerment of Hispanic professionals in the Chicago area. He was a founding member of SHPE-Chicago and was involved on the formation of the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE). He is an active member of many engineering professional societies and has served on the Board of Directors of several of them. He is Past President of the American Council of Engineering Companies, Illinois.

Cevallos-Candau received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, and a Master of Science and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a Registered Engineer in Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas and Michigan.

In a year when manufacturing continued to lead the economic rebound, it makes sense that plant manager bonuses rebounded. Plant Engineering’s annual Salary Survey shows both wages and bonuses rose in 2012 after a retreat the year before.

Average salary across all job titles for plant floor management rose 3.5% to $95,446, and bonus compensation jumped to $15,162, a 4.2% increase from the 2010 level and double the 2011 total, which showed a sharp drop in bonus.
