TIPS

Twitter maintenance

If using Twitter for business purposes, cull your Twitter followers regularly. If someone is following you and a thousand others, but not being followed or not tweeting, block them. Also consider blocking tweeters who are not allied with your business goals or who might leave a negative impression on clients.

Patch in

LinkedIn has many groups where people voluntarily join to exchange views in discussions, ask and answer questions, and share job leads and news. Many professional societies such as ASHRAE, NFPA, and IEEE have groups. Groups are also centered on topics, such as LEED, Smart Grid, and energy. Go to the Groups section of LinkedIn and use keyword searches to find and join groups of interest to you.

Listorious

Twitter's new lists feature allows anyone to curate the real-time Web. Listorious makes it easy to find the best lists of Twitter users on any given topic, and for list creator to publicize their lists. www.listorious.com

Annual Salary Survey

After almost a decade of uncertainty, the confidence of plant floor managers is soaring. Even with a number of challenges and while implementing new technologies, there is a renewed sense of optimism among plant managers about their business and their future.

The respondents to the 2014 Plant Engineering Salary Survey come from throughout the U.S. and serve a variety of industries, but they are uniform in their optimism about manufacturing. This year’s survey found 79% consider manufacturing a secure career. That’s up from 75% in 2013 and significantly higher than the 63% figure when Plant Engineering first started asking that question a decade ago.
