NIMS Student Summit at IMTS puts manufacturers and their future together

Aim is to stir up interest and excitement toward careers in precision manufacturing among young people through close contact with industry professionals and technology.

The NIMS Student Summit at IMTS 2010 combines an interactive Career Development Center with a dynamic self-guided tour of the nation's greatest technology and manufacturing exhibition.

Sponsored by AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology along with the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS), the NIMS Student Summit aims to stir up interest and excitement toward careers in precision manufacturing among young people through close contact with industry professionals, interactive demonstrations, and real life examples.

The NIMS Student Summit is open from Sept. 13 through Sept. 18 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. daily. This year’s summit will be located on Level I of the South Building at McCormick Place in room S105. Admission is free for educators and students, making this a unique field trip opportunity for middle school students to high school students and college students alike.

Highlights of the 2010 NIMS Student Summit include:

·         Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony - Monday, September 13 at 8:15 a.m. to celebrate the opening of the 2010 NIMS Student Summit.

·         Student Summit Orientation - Brief overview of what to expect at IMTS, followed by a presentation by Sandvik Coromant that connects the average day of a high school student with the precision machining industry.

·         Career Development Center (CDC) - Houses interactive exhibits from companies, colleges, and industry associations, giving students the opportunity to speak with professionals about potential careers and desired skill sets.

·         Resume Collection - Graduating students may leave a copy of his or her resume in a drop box inside the Career Development Center. These resumes will be passed on to interested IMTS exhibitors. Instructors will be notified prior to IMTS with the list of companies that will be receiving these resumes.

·         Group Photos - Each group of students and instructors will have the choice of having their photo taken as a souvenir from the event. Photos will be available for purchase online following IMTS.

·         Career Resource CD - Provided to each student, includes links to online resources, templates for resumes, information on NIMS Accredited programs at colleges and universities around the country, and much more.

·         Educator's Handbook - Provided onsite to every educator who brings a group of students to the Student Summit. Includes information about the NIMS Student Summit, IMTS, registration, directions and parking information, show etiquette, dining, and other Student Summit events.

·         Student-Friendly Exhibitors - Students will be given a self-directed tour book to guide them through IMTS. Students will have the opportunity to engage with exhibit staff to discuss professional careers and the skill sets required to get there.

In a year when manufacturing continued to lead the economic rebound, it makes sense that plant manager bonuses rebounded. Plant Engineering’s annual Salary Survey shows both wages and bonuses rose in 2012 after a retreat the year before.

Average salary across all job titles for plant floor management rose 3.5% to $95,446, and bonus compensation jumped to $15,162, a 4.2% increase from the 2010 level and double the 2011 total, which showed a sharp drop in bonus.
