David Sanders has joined PlantEngineering.com as our newest blogger. His regular blog, the General List, appears on the Website and is updated regularly.

Sanders is facility and EHS manager for Metcam, Inc., a precision metal fabricator north of Atlanta. He has worked in manufacturing for more than 20 years in the metalworking and machine building industries. His portfolio includes numerous mechanical and electrical automation projects.

“I am excited to be able to participate in a forum where I can share my experiences and give back some of the knowledge I have acquired over the years; moreover, I am excited to learn something from my readers,” said Sanders in his initial blog, posted June 15. “I will be blogging on many topics, primarily centered on manufacturing and metalworking. I will be including commentary on everything from process management to environmental compliance.”

The blog’s title is also a play on words. “The General List, a list of things: to-do’s, parts lists, wish lists,” he wrote. “Then there is the generalist that’s me.

“In my younger days I was a go-for; now I am the go-to. It’s not that I am proficient in everything, it’s primarily because my goal is to help everyone do their job well,” he added. “If I don’t know the answer, then I don’t know, but I will do everything within my ability to find the answer.

Annual Salary Survey

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.

There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.

But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
