Luminescence sensors have improved performance
LUT8 and LUT9 sensors from Sick react to UV-activated pigments; bar code scanners serve material handling applications.
LUT8 and LUT9 offer cost-effective solution for demanding luminescent mark detection applications
Sick, manufacturer of industrial sensors, safety systems, machine vision, and automatic identification products, announced its LUT8 and LUT9 luminescent sensors. These sensors react to luminescent pigments, which are activated by an ultraviolet (UV) light source in the sensor. The LUT8 and LUT9 sensors provide longer sensing ranges and more selection models than previous versions. LUT9 also offers selectable dual light ports, IO-Link for remote monitoring and 2-point teach-in. Appropriate applications include high accuracy luminescent mark detection in packaging, food and beverage, automotive, lumber, pharmaceutical, print, postal and general manufacturing.
Separately, Sick announced its CLV650 bar code scanners with autofocus technology, and CLV640 bar code scanners with dynamic focus. These augment Sick's CLV600 family of flexible 1D bar code scanners for applications in the material handling and logistics.

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.
There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.
But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
