Kevin J. Kilgallen, President of Mid Atlantic Machinery, Inc. of Harrisburg, Pa. has been elected chairman of the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) for the 2014-15 board term.

Kilgallen succeeds R. Stephen Flynn, President, Optical Gaging Products, Inc., Rochester, N.Y., as AMT chairman

Kilgallen co-founded Mid Atlantic Machinery in 1991. He also co-founded Southern States Machinery, Greensboro, N.C., in 2002.

“After 17 years of participation, I look forward to representing AMT for all groups and members,” Kilgallen said. “Our new AMT board is made up of committed, dynamic and reputable stewards of the manufacturing industry who will provide guidance to the organization. I look forward to serving alongside the executive committee and board of directors.”

In a press release, Kilgallen said his emphasis in the coming year would be “to encourage members to engage their association and their industry in three ways: try a new AMT program that will have an impact on future success; support a community college or trade school that is promoting skill developments specific to the manufacturing industry; and finally, make our industry’s voice heard by writing your U.S. Senators and Representatives regarding what we need to advance and maintain our competitiveness in the global manufacturing world.”

The AMT board elected Jerry Rex, President, Hegman Machinery, LLC, A Morris Group, Inc. Company, Maple Grove, Minn., to serve as first vice chairman. Richard L. Annual Salary Survey

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.

There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.

But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
