Industry 4.0 concepts at IMTS 2014

Innovative solutions such as Google Glass are highlighted at the Beckhoff booth located in the Industrial Automation North America (IANA) section.

Beckhoff Automation is set to bring Industry 4.0 concepts to attendees of the IMTS trade show, held September 8-13, 2014 in Chicago's McCormick Place. Beckhoff, located in booth E-4905 in the Industrial Automation North America (IANA) section, will exhibit a range of industrial solutions, including a demo that highlights the use of Google Glass in automation, all-in-one robot and machine control, and standard OPC UA connectivity solutions.

Automation solutions for machine tool and CNC applications

Beckhoff's line of machine tool and CNC applications uses a scalable line of PC-based controllers. The Power of One controls philosophy (one PC-based controller, one software platform, and one network) ensures that lean automation designs and streamlined control system architectures remain intact.

Beckhoff is presenting a technology study at IMTS that demonstrates Google Glass as a new concept for machine operation in an Industry 4.0 framework. The 'augmented reality glasses,' which were primarily developed for the consumer market, integrate a heads-up display for information and a digital camera, among numerous other features. Google Glass can also be used in industrial environments as a 'wearable HMI' for machine operation and observing plant production.

TwinCAT 3 and EtherCAT

TwinCAT 3.1 software, with configurations and programs can be revision-controlled and compared in a source code administration tool. TwinCAT is a multi-core system. With this software, individual cores can be reserved for the use of exclusive TwinCAT 3 in the runtime. The EtherCAT industrial Ethernet system is an established industry standard for the demanding requirements of automation applications. With topology characteristics, the real-time fieldbus can be used for all machine communication, and is an I/O, safety, and drive bus system all in one. Beckhoff offers a universal and complete system for EtherCAT, from the controller to the safe servo drive for dynamic positioning tasks.

CFE Media will sponsor the 2014 Global Automation and Manufacturing Summit on Sept. 10 starting at 8:15 a.m. in Room W190 in the West Wing of McCormick Place.

reference - Industry 4.0 meets Google Glass

In an environment where in most companies are still struggling with practical and enforceable byod (bring your own device) policies, here comes another (welcome) disruption by way of WYOD - wear your own device (in short WD - worn devices). In an industrial environment - safety and security is paramount, hence due controls need to be built up to avoid any ill - effects.

Annual Salary Survey

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.

There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.

But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
