Higher callings

I have a note in one of my files that reads: "Always remember, you have a higher calling than simply making a buck for the company." That higher calling can take many forms depending on the people and the situation.

That higher calling can take many forms depending on the people and the situation. Some examples are the calling to be honest, the calling to treat people well, the calling to maintain a positive attitude, and the calling to ensure safety. I believe that when the right callings are given the right priorities, the bucks will come to the company automatically.

One calling that is especially important in industry is the pursuit of excellence. What constitutes excellence is largely up to you, but defining it and striving for it will most assuredly improve your operations and processes. And in the end, the company will make more bucks as a result.

This year's winner of the North American Maintenance Excellence (NAME) Award has demonstrated the value of pursuing excellence. Novozymes North America, Inc. (until recently, Novo Nordisk BioChem North America, Inc.) in Franklinton, NC, established a mission to develop a "world class" maintenance function. And in its efforts to that end, its maintenance has moved from reactive to fixed time, to condition monitoring, and to designing out problems.

Thanks to its quest for maintenance excellence, Novozymes is now designing its equipment and facilities for maximum reliability and best overall cost based on net present value. Its best practices are being shared with the company's other plants throughout the world, as well as with customers.

Novozymes is an outstanding example of how the pursuit of a higher calling accomplishes much more than does simply making a buck for the company.

Meanwhile, pursuit of a higher calling at Plant Engineering has earned the magazine recognition. We're pleased to have received our fourth award for editorial excellence from Folio:, "the magazine for magazine management." Plant Engineering was also honored in 1993, 1994, and 1999.

Our higher calling has always been to provide the kind of editorial content that helps our readers solve their problems. It is especially gratifying when our efforts to fulfill our editorial mission are recognized by others in the publishing industry.

Annual Salary Survey

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.

There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.

But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
