Looking for cutting-edge knowledge on plant floor issues? How about this observation? “E-commerce is here to stay, and the problems will be worked out. If you’re not already learning about e-commerce, it’s time to get started. If you’re not looking at the possibilities, step aside for someone who is.

“I know. We’re plant engineers, not purchasing managers. And getting those storerooms shaped up isn’t that high on the priority list. But guess what? It’s about to be moved up a few notches.”

Or how about this comment on the importance of maintenance integration: “In these days of just-in-time, supply chain management, Lean manufacturing, capacity assurance, and global competition, it is essential that production is available to meet customer demands. Key to meeting this goal is maintenance support. Viewing maintenance as simply a “burden and services” entry on the ledger sheet is no longer adequate.”

That’s the kind of knowledge every plant manager is looking for today. Smart PLANT ENGINEERING readers got that knowledge six years ago. Both quotes were taken from the May 2000 issue of PLANT ENGINEERING .

You can review all kinds of knowledge, from nuts and bolts repair issues to top-of-mind thinking on making your plant floor run more smoothly, in the Issue Archive section of the PLANT ENGINEERING Website at www.plantengineering.com .

Annual Salary Survey

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.

There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.

But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
