Emerson expands asset management reach
Emerson Process Management announced Version 7.0 of its AMS Suite: Intelligent Device Manager. According to Emerson, Version 7.0 expands the reach of predictive technology by enabling AMS Device Manager to support its Smart Remote Automation technology, and also by increasing connectivity options, which include a High Speed Ethernet (HSE) interface for FOUNDATION fieldbus devices. The Device Manager application powers PlantWeb’s digital plant architecture predictive capability.
AMS Device Manager Version 7.0 supports all HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus devices, according to Emerson. Real-time HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus information is integrated in a single application that includes a single alert monitor to watch over all devices, and one audit trail that maintains accurate records of those devices. One set of work practices can be established for instrument management applications.
Highlights of Version 7.0 include:
%%POINT%%A system interface that supports PlantWeb digital architecture for Smart Remote Operations, enabling access to diagnostics at remote sites and real-time connection to centralized operations centers. Remote applications include offshore platforms, wellheads, and water and wastewater facilities that extend beyond the confines of the typical process plant.
%%POINT%%The HSE interface allows FOUNDATION fieldbus devices to be incorporated into AMS Device Manager through connectivity options and enables communication with multiple fieldbus devices for configuration and diagnostic purposes — even if the plant’s current control system does not support fieldbus technology. Plants can use the best of both HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus devices while consistently employing best practices.
%%POINT%%Increased connectivity to all HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus devices.
%%POINT%%Warning of developing problems with motor-pump machine trains through health and diagnostic information.
%%POINT%%Advanced monitoring of digital valve controllers to obtain performance diagnostics from valves while in operation.
%%POINT%%Expansion of calibration capabilities of AMS Device Manager to include calibration of FOUNDATION fieldbus devices and mass flow devices.

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.
There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.
But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
