EC: EZ Programmable Power Supply
Power - Energy, power protection: The EZ Programmable Power supply is an industrial 24 V dc, single phase, NEC Class 2, din-rail switched mode power supply with unique displays for voltage/current readouts and maintenance alarms. This is a Control Engineering 2013 Engineers' Choice finalist.
With EZAutomation's Programmable Power Supply, EZPPS, plant maintenance no longer need to bring a volt meter to the control cabinet when a device is not powering up. Furthermore, before an HMI, PLC, ac drive or any other control equipment dies due to no power input, thus causing a manufacturing line to stop, a warning signal can be sent to maintenance to avoid any down time!
EZAutomation's, EZPPS, are field programmable power supplies that include built-in digital displays that provide, at a glance, additional information without connecting a multi-meter. The NEC Class 2 models add flexibility through easy, field-programmable current-limit using the displays and two buttons. The power supplies, in 30 W, 60 W, and 90 W models, have a 3-digit LED display for output voltage and 2-digit LED display for output current.
The power supplies also have maintenance timer functions, showing expected lifespan based on usage, a function that is particularly valuable to schedule replacement before an outage occurs. (Electrolytic capacitors in a switching power supply have limited life, depending upon current and temperature.) A pre-failure warning alarm can go to a stack light or other device accepting the output signal.
Other attributes include DIN mount compact plastic housing at 3.1 in. x 1.8 in. x 4 in. deep, and plug-in connectors for easy maintenance. Operating temperature is -25 to 60 C, with 95% relative humidity. The units have 24 V dc output with less than 100 mV peak to peak ripple, with 1% load regulation; output voltage adjustable from front plate, +5%, to -10%; and 85-264 V ac universal input voltage.
In addition, the unit is protected against an output short or an overload with automatic recovery. In summary, EZAutomation's, EZPPS brings a new, simple and intuitive approach to power supplies that can minimize troubleshooting and downtime, while remaining both cost-competitive and made in America.
Annual Salary Survey
After almost a decade of uncertainty, the confidence of plant floor managers is soaring. Even with a number of challenges and while implementing new technologies, there is a renewed sense of optimism among plant managers about their business and their future.
The respondents to the 2014 Plant Engineering Salary Survey come from throughout the U.S. and serve a variety of industries, but they are uniform in their optimism about manufacturing. This year’s survey found 79% consider manufacturing a secure career. That’s up from 75% in 2013 and significantly higher than the 63% figure when Plant Engineering first started asking that question a decade ago.
