EC: C440 Electronic Overload Relay
Power - monitoring, protection - Eaton Corporation - C440 Electronic Overload Relay. The C440 provides customers with advanced, reliable and accurate motor protection featuring both integral ground fault protection and communications capabilities, in a single, compact device engineered for machinery original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), project construction and industrial end-user markets. This is a Control Engineering 2011 Engineers' Choice (EC) Honorable Mention.
Motor failure has the potential to cause production downtime, costly repair bills, and numerous safety concerns for plant personnel. For these reasons, motor protection should be a key element in protecting your organization's most valuable assets. Selecting accurate and reliable motor overload protection is the best way to manage your costs and maintain system integrity. The C440 and XT electronic overload relays from Eaton provide reliable, accurate and value driven protection, including communications capabilities, in a single compact device.
The electronic design of Eaton's new C440 Electronic Overload Relay delivers enhanced motor protection based on the ability to directly monitor motor current in each phase. Thermal modeling is performed electronically with precision solid-state components. The electronics accurately identify excessive current or phase loss and react to the condition with greater speed, reliability and repeatability than a traditional electromechanical device.
With a patented, compact design, the new electronic overload relays are easy to install, maintain and configure. Integral communications and ground fault protection means there are fewer devices to install. A light-emitting diode (LED) display on the device provides easy-to-see indication of device status and fault indication, allowing maintenance personnel to quickly determine if the device and motor are operating appropriately.
Customers can select the motor protection features they need, with selectable trip class, ground fault detection, phase imbalance and full load current (FLA) adjustment (5:1). Further, the C440 and XT overload relays can integrate into plant management systems, allowing network monitoring and providing asset protection.

Annual Salary Survey
In a year when manufacturing continued to lead the economic rebound, it makes sense that plant manager bonuses rebounded. Plant Engineering’s annual Salary Survey shows both wages and bonuses rose in 2012 after a retreat the year before.
Average salary across all job titles for plant floor management rose 3.5% to $95,446, and bonus compensation jumped to $15,162, a 4.2% increase from the 2010 level and double the 2011 total, which showed a sharp drop in bonus.
