EC: 8B isoLynx SLX300
Network Integration - data acquisition, integration - Dataforth Corporation - 8B isoLynx SLX300 - The 8B isoLynx SLX300 builds on the proven reliability and outstanding performance of the miniature-sized SensorLex 8B isolated signal conditioning modules to provide a compact, low cost solution for wide ranging rugged industrial applications. This is a Control Engineering 2011 Engineers' Choice (EC) nominee.
Dataforth's new 8B isoLynx SLX300 data acquisition system builds on the proven reliability and outstanding performance of the SCM5B isoLynx SLX200 DAQ system and the miniature-sized SensorLex 8B isolated analog signal conditioning modules to provide a compact, low cost solution for wide ranging rugged industrial applications. A number of SLX300 features represent significant technological advancements.
First, the SLX300's combination of analog and digital isolation on one PCB allows unrivaled flexibility of analog and digital channel configuration: choose from 70 SensorLex 8B analog and 14 SCMD digital I/O modules to configure the SLX300 with up to 12 channels of isolated analog input, 4 channels of isolated analog output, and 8 channels of isolated digital I/O. This capability greatly expands both the quantity of possible data acquisition and the types of data that can be acquired. The digital channels can also be configured to perform 7 different advanced special functions.
Second, multiple powerful, high-speed microcontrollers and high performance data converters at the heart of the system enable simultaneous analog and digital I/O at sustained rates of up to 3.0kS/s while advanced features include high-speed acquisition to 100kS/s burst, the highest throughput in industrial I/O. Data is stored to a 192k sample buffer.
Third, to ensure secure data acquisition, the SLX300 provides 1500Vrms input-to-output and channel-to-channel isolation, as well as 240Vrms field-side protection. 8B miniaturization allows more electrical isolation to be packed into a 1U enclosure than any other product on the market.
Fourth, the SLX300 has its own dedicated software: ReDAQ Shape, Dataforth's new out-of-the-box DAQ software designed specifically for this system. ReDAQ Shape provides the easiest and most efficient development tool to create, save, and open graphical user interface projects as well as to test, process, and analyze acquired data; it is also the optimal way to set up and configure the many powerful SLX300 functions.

Annual Salary Survey
After almost a decade of uncertainty, the confidence of plant floor managers is soaring. Even with a number of challenges and while implementing new technologies, there is a renewed sense of optimism among plant managers about their business and their future.
The respondents to the 2014 Plant Engineering Salary Survey come from throughout the U.S. and serve a variety of industries, but they are uniform in their optimism about manufacturing. This year’s survey found 79% consider manufacturing a secure career. That’s up from 75% in 2013 and significantly higher than the 63% figure when Plant Engineering first started asking that question a decade ago.
