With the prominence of our Product of the Year Awards in this issue, it seems appropriate to tell you of some other awards that should be of interest.

– Last month, Plant Engineering was proud to receive the Folio: Award for Editorial Excellence . Plant Engineering was the only magazine honored for its work in the engineering category.

This prestigious award for magazines is unique in the publishing industry in that it weighs a magazine’s total editorial product against its own stated objectives. Thus, it recognizes the entire editorial team, from writers and editors to designers and artists. It includes consideration of the subject matter and how it is presented.

This is the third time Plant Engineering has been honored with the Folio: award, a record matched by few other magazines of any kind.

– Also last month, the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) announced the winners of several awards it presents in the field of plant/facilities engineering.

The first of these is the FAME Award of Excellence recognizing the achievements of plant engineering and facilities management departments that have tackled challenges with ingenuity and world-class professionalism.

The 1999 award has been presented to Atmel Corporation’s Colorado Springs Facilities Group. These professionals were recognized for conducting a five-point program to achieve cost reductions while maintaining continuous improvement initiatives.

AFE also presented two Awards of Merit. One went to Nalco/Exxon Energy Chemicals’ Sugar Land (TX) Facility Maintenance Dept. for extensive energy audits that led to successful efficiency improvements. The other recognized the U.S. Army Medical Command for an integrated training program that affects newly assigned military and civilian facility managers and planners and fulfills the continuing education needs of those already assigned to medical treatment facilities.

– And finally, we’re pleased to recognize the products of the finalists in our 12th annual Plant Engineering Product of the Year Awards special issue. From the hundreds of entries we received, we’re pleased to present the products chosen by our judges for your review and consideration. We encourage you to take some time to look them over. We’re sure you’ll find some that would be useful in your plant. Then use the ballot on p 50 to vote for the five you consider the most useful and innovative.
