Annual event comes up a winner in Las Vegas
The Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) reported record-breaking attendance for its annual conference, held October 25-29, 1997, in Las Vegas, NV. The event attracted nearly 750 participants -- 200 more than the previous year.

The Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) reported record-breaking attendance for its annual conference, held October 25-29, 1997, in Las Vegas, NV. The event attracted nearly 750 participants -- 200 more than the previous year.
"We're proud to host an event that so many facilities professionals find useful," said Managing Director Bruce Medaris. "The success of the conference underscores the value of our commitment to help our members learn, lead, and influence their careers and professions."
Keynote speaker was Howard Putnam, author and former executive for Braniff and Southwest airlines. Putnam spoke on "bottom line improvement."
The conference included more than 40 technical sessions, CPE review, nationally acclaimed guest speakers, and an awards banquet that recognized outstanding achievements by individuals, corporations, and government agencies.
Achievement honors went to:
- Chapter of the year -- Twin Cities Chapter 13 in Minnesota
- Outstanding achievement -- Gerald Bender
- Lifetime achievement -- Charles M. Lemon (posthumously)
- AFE fellow -- Ed Slone and John Blumenshine III, CPE
- Facilities Management Excellence (FAME) awards of merit -- Chevron Real Estate Management Co., NASA, and the Division of Engineering and Architectural Services/Washington State Dept. of General Administration
- FAME award of excellence -- Perkin-Elmer Corp.

2012 Salary Survey
In a year when manufacturing continued to lead the economic rebound, it makes sense that plant manager bonuses rebounded. Plant Engineering’s annual Salary Survey shows both wages and bonuses rose in 2012 after a retreat the year before.
Average salary across all job titles for plant floor management rose 3.5% to $95,446, and bonus compensation jumped to $15,162, a 4.2% increase from the 2010 level and double the 2011 total, which showed a sharp drop in bonus.
