Smit is registered as a chartered engineer with the UK Engineering Council and is a member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology UK. He has been a senior control systems engineer for over 15 years in dredging, offshore, and heavy machinery. Smit is a TÜV SÜD Functional Safety Certified Professional since 2011 and is a Vijeo Citect Certified Engineer since 2014. Smit is a consultant for the DNV Joint Industry Project on producing the Recommended Practices for Subsea Lifting Appliances document. He is a successful lead engineer, project manager, interface manager, and package manager on various projects displaying broad responsibility and leadership. Outside of work, Smit is the treasurer and founder of Stichting Lammetjeswiel (Lammetjeswiel Foundation). He also enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters.
