PLC: Switches, Circuits, and Basic Functions--Communications

Part 10 of the Switches, Circuits, and Basic Functions Series describes communications between computer programming and programming logic controllers.

  • Most people use computers to program the PLC even though some still use what we call handheld programmers.

  • The communications from the computer are usually done in one of three methods: Serial – USB – Ethernet

  • Serial straight forward but going away fast

  • USB more common today but pitfalls

  • Show Device Manager Setup to set comm. Port

  • Ethernet for very high speed communications, which we will be covering under a different video.

  • Main point of this video is the serial and USB and the USB pitfalls
