Arc Flash University: Selective Coordination
June 5, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. PDT/1:00 p.m. CDT/2:00 p.m. EDT

In the fourth class at Arc Flash University, we take a look at selective coordination – the process of clearing an electrical fault as quickly as possible while containing the outage to the smallest possible area. When selective coordination is done properly, the overcurrent protective device installed closest to the fault opens before protective devices installed upstream. Localizing the outage improves uptime by keeping power going to the rest of the plant.

Arc Flash Training
Thursday, April 3, 2008 11am PST/1pm CST/2pm EST

The biggest variable in achieving arc flash safety isn’t your equipment; it’s your people. Making sure they are aware at all times of the dangers of electrical equipment and work to maintain their safety and the integrity of the equipment is vital. Industry experts give you a step-by-step training regimen for arc flash training.

Electrical Safety Webcast: You've Completed an Arc Flash Study, Now What?
Thursday, March 27, 2008, 11:00am PST/1:00pm CST/2:00pm EST

You've completed an arc flash study. Now what?

You realize the safety concern, business risk and cost of an arc flash incident. You've taken some steps to address it and you've discovered several potential areas in your facility where the hazards are great. But have you evaluated the solutions? Are you aware that you have many options to mitigate high risk areas? An arc flash safety program is more than just compliance to OSHA mandates. It should be a pro-active program that integrates a wide range of solutions into a comprehensive plan to minimize the personnel safety and business risks posed by Arc Flash incidents.

This webcast will provide the framework for a new way of looking at the problem from a broader perspective. We will feature arc flash mitigating techniques ranging from equipment labeling and personnel training, through solutions that reduce the available fault current, shorten fault clearing time, move people away from the arc, redirect the arc fault and even prevent the fault from occurring in the first place. We will also give you a look at the problem from a federal/regulatory viewpoint and we will offer some insights from people at the plant level who grapple with this issue every day.

Process manufacturers, their suppliers and federal agencies are always looking for the tightest safeguards to maintain the balance between safety and productivity. The use of food-grade lubricants is one solution, but eliminating oil from the process is an even higher goal.

The air compressor industry is meeting international testing requirements to eliminate any oil contamination in the process industries – not just food, but petrochemical, semiconductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing as well. Meeting the Class Zero designation from testing agency TUV is an important step in assuring non contamination in these critical manufacturing processes.

Dave Hebert of Atlas Copco will discuss this technological breakthrough that eliminates one of the variables that can affect contamination in the processing industries at a Plant Engineering Webcast on Tuesday, December 11th at 1 p.m. CST. In a discussion moderated by Plant Engineering editor Bob Vavra, Hebert will talk about Class Zero, why it is important to the process industry and how this technology makes compressors better and safer for everyone involved in manufacturing.
