Automation System: Risk and Reward

Today’s automation systems are a hybrid of mission-specific control technologies and Windows-based open systems. This open architecture offers possibilities in terms of system configurations and application software; however, it presents some risks as well.
Incompatibility of disparate applications running on the same platform, mismanagement of user privileges, and other security risks threaten the reliability and security of these systems.
While automation professionals understand how to manage the configuration of the automation systems themselves, they don’t understand how to manage the underlying infrastructure.
