Weekly merger, acquisition, deal update: June 22

This week Morrissey Goodale tracked three domestic deals and two international deals. This most recent activity brings the total year-to-date deal count in the United States to 81, down 7% from the 87 domestic deals tracked through the same period in 2011. Beyond the U.S., the total global deal count is now 152, down 13% from the 175 global deals tracked through the same period last year.

International engineering, architecture, design-build, surveying and geospatial solutions firm Merrick & Company (Aurora, CO) acquired the water engineering firm of McLaughlin Water Engineers (Denver, CO).  McLaughlin has served the water systems, wastewater, water resources, drainage and flood control, utility economics, and whitewater design markets in the Rocky Mountain region since 1966. This acquisition provides Merrick with the added wet-infrastructure resources to continue its reach throughout the US in the firm's focus markets of energy, sustainable infrastructure, life sciences, national security, and geospatial solutions.  Morrissey Goodale initiated the transaction on behalf of Merrick & Company and advised Merrick & Company throughout the process.  Link to details

Full-service engineering and construction management firm to the public, private and institutional sectors CHA (Albany, NY), merged with full-service global engineering consulting and design firm RW Armstrong (Indianapolis, IN).  The merger combines 740-person CHA with 500-person RW Armstrong and creates a global engineering consulting, design, management and architecture firm with total revenues in excess of $210 million.  RW Armstrong becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of CHA and will retain its name.  RW Armstrong has 11 offices in the U.S., and five offices in the Middle East, North Africa, Azerbaijan and the Pacific.  CHA has 30 offices stretching from Maine to Texas. Link to details

Multi-discipline engineering consultancy to the energy, hydro power, water resources and transportation sectors Lahmeyer Group (Bad Vilbel, Germany) acquired a 70-percent interest in IDP Consult (Quezon City, Philippines), a management consultancy firm with proficiencies in the fields of water supply and sanitation, energy and infrastructure, environmental and urban development, as well as municipal finance and financial management, institutional capacity building and governance.  Link to details

International multi-discipline engineering and design consultancy SMEC (Melbourne, Australia) merged with 1,000-person multi-discipline engineering consultancy Vela VKE (Johannesburg, South Africa).  Link to details

In a noteworthy initiative (though not considered a deal for the purposes of this update), international engineering and project management company AMEC (London, UK) signed a collaboration agreement with Aibel (Stavanger, Norway), a leading provider of engineering, construction and technical services to the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors. The agreement allows AMEC and Aibel to jointly deliver projects for the oil and gas industry in the Norwegian Continental Shelf.  Link to details

In a noteworthy initiative (though not considered a deal for the purposes of this update), global water, mineral and energy solutions provider Layne Christensen (Mission Woods, KS) acquired the remaining 50-percent interest of Costa Fortuna (Sau Paulo, Brazil), a provider of specialty foundation and specialized marine geotechnical services in South America, including services related to the implementation of large-diameter bored piles, diaphragm walls, root piles, soil nailing, jet grouting, investigatory geotechnical services, and maritime and river specialized foundations.  Layne Christensen acquired its initial 50-percent interest in Costa Fortuna back in July, 2010.  Link to details

Annual Salary Survey

Before the calendar turned, 2016 already had the makings of a pivotal year for manufacturing, and for the world.

There were the big events for the year, including the United States as Partner Country at Hannover Messe in April and the 2016 International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago in September. There's also the matter of the U.S. presidential elections in November, which promise to shape policy in manufacturing for years to come.

But the year started with global economic turmoil, as a slowdown in Chinese manufacturing triggered a worldwide stock hiccup that sent values plummeting. The continued plunge in world oil prices has resulted in a slowdown in exploration and, by extension, the manufacture of exploration equipment.
