Achievements

Himmelberg has been promoted three times since joining Matrix six years ago. He has acted as an automation engineering consultant for various industries with a focus on the pharmaceutical industry. He led the design team for a new building automation system for a leading pharmaceutical company which encompassed six separate buildings. The company entrusted him to train their full time employees on the new system. Himmelberg was the lead automation engineer on a number of projects for a pharmaceutical company that included PLC and HMI programming for bioreactors, chromatography systems, viral filtration systems, and clean in place systems. He programmed an automated solution for tracking billets through a local steel mill using their currently installed I/O and hardware.

Non-work-related activity

Himmelberg enjoys hiking with his family in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. He enjoys the views and sense of accomplishment whenever they conquer a new peak. Himmelberg also likes teaching his two young sons about the great outdoors.

Engineering-related activity

Himmelberg enjoys designing and implementing updates to his home, which is over a century old, ensuring that everything is up to current safety codes. He also performs all the preventative maintenance and mechanical fixes for his family’s automobiles. He enjoys troubleshooting car issues and the sense of accomplishment when that check engine light goes away.

Interesting details

Himmelberg is an Eagle Scout, and he still uses the leadership skills and outdoorsman skills learned in scouting in his professional career and his recreational endeavors. His wife works for a publishing company that publishes crafting magazines and books. He has acted as a male model for them in the past modeling sweaters and other knitted accessories.

Began interest

While in college Himmelberg took electives in philosophy and logic. He liked how real-world logical arguments applied to computer programming. He uses that knowledge of logic and philosophy across all programming languages and applications. Himmelberg’s first experience with automation was when he worked as a Co-op for Pfizer. His job was to program and troubleshoot automated liquid handlers and lab equipment used in their high-throughput screening process, which they use to discover possible new drugs.
